Description

Łukasz Ściga is a Polish programmer who runs the Wookash Podcast, where he has interviewed many influential programmers.

In 2025, he interviewed Greg Kroah-Hartman of the Linux Foundation, one of the most influential Linux kernel maintainers, currently responsible for the -stable branch, USB, TTY layer, and a number of other subsystems.

Task

Listen to the approximately 2-hour interview (youtube, spotify) and write a short 300-500 word response to one of the following prompts:

  1. Much of what Greg discusses with Łukasz has been covered in class so far. Identify a few of these topics and write about what you found interesting or suprising about what Greg had to say about them. Did he say anything that contradicts what you’ve learned or would have assumed?

  2. Greg talks at length about what it is like to do kernel development in C. What were your takeaways from this? How did his discussion compare to your personal experience so far with this course’s programming assignments?

  3. The Linux kernel is one of biggest success stories for the open-source development model. What were some of the policies and mechanisms Greg described that were incorporated into the Linux community’s culture? What are some things described that you would like to emulate in your own work, projects, and/or future programming career?
